Learning to better manage your money
is not rocket science.

If you borrow money, it’s best to limit yourself to what you need, even if your financial institution offers you a better rate. Remember: when you have access to more credit, it’s easy to live beyond your means.

If controlling your spending seems like an insurmountable task, perhaps it’s time for you to consider new consumer habits. Often all you need to do is manage your finances better—not make more money.

Here are a few small tips that will help you make a big difference.

  • Pay current expenses in cash or by debit card.
  • Do not sign any contracts and above all, avoid “buy now, pay later” offers.
  • Do not accumulate credit cards. One card with a $500 or $1,000 limit is enough. Use it for emergencies and turn down any limit increases.
  • Always know where your finances stand and where your money is going. To do so, keep an up-to-date budget of family income and expenses. At the end of each month, check actual spending against estimates made at the beginning of the month.
  • Prepare a balance sheet summarizing your financial situation at least once a year. To avoid any unpleasant surprises, it’s a good idea to keep a contingency fund that will cover current expenses for at least two months.
  • Calculate the time you’ll need to work to pay for your purchases. This will help you avoid compulsive buying. Remember: there are always less expensive ways to meet needs.
  • Analyze your buying habits to better understand your personality and make wiser decisions.
  • Keep home-related expenses to no more than 30% of your gross income.
  • Feel free to call your local Association coopérative d’économie familiale (ACEF) or Credit Counselling Services Office to get support or additional information.
