Robert and Agathe’s story

Robert and Agathe have been married for 38 years and have five children. Robert is a retired electrician and Agathe is a homemaker. Unemployment, an accumulation of credit cards, the purchase of a house, renovations, and other factors gradually led to bankruptcy. Robert thought bankruptcy was the worst thing for him—as though it was dishonest. “Our parents never had debts.” Agathe took the initiative to consult a Raymond Chabot professional, because bankruptcy was looming over their heads and they had to find a solution.

How Raymond Chabot helped

Robert was relieved he didn’t have to talk to creditors anymore. “It was a load off my back.” Their advisor first took the time to explain to them what going bankrupt meant. She then taught them how to set up and manage their own budget. “It’s a privilege to have the help of a professional and to be able to get back on your feet.”

Seven years after going bankrupt, they now know how to manage a budget and just bought a new house.

Today they no longer have as many credit cards as they used to.

Agathe’s advice

“When you get to the point where you use one credit card to pay off another, you have to stop right then and there. And whatever the situation, you have to stay strong together. Communication is the most important thing between a couple. Don’t be ashamed to talk about it and ask for help.”
